In 1962 the homologation rules were changed for GT cars, requiring 100 cars of a series build in 365 days. Porsche decided to build a car for such a series – the Porsche 904, it was powered by a 4 cylinder Boxer engine with a displacement of 1966ccm, dry sump lubrication, 2 valves per cylinder, delivering 180 bph @ 7,000 rpm. In some cars 8 cylinder engines were used 904-008 und 904-009 to allow Porsche to run in the above 2000cm³ class as well. The Porsche 904 GTS followed the model 718 W-RS. |
